Traditional, designer or light everyday pairs, how to match the lumba to her bangles, and what to send when they live abroad.

The short answer

  • Pick the lumba first, to suit her bangles. Then match the rakhi to it.
  • Traditional: thread and pearl. Festive: kundan. Everyday: slim and light.
  • Sending abroad? Choose a light, flat pair that fits in an envelope.

A bhaiya-bhabhi set is a rakhi for your brother and a lumba for his wife, made to look like they belong together. It is one of the most popular choices for married brothers, and one of the easiest to get slightly wrong.

Start with the lumba

The rakhi goes on his wrist and can be almost anything. The lumba has to sit well on her bangles, which is harder. So choose the lumba first. Heavy kundan suits glass or gold bangles worn for the festival. A light pearl or thread lumba suits someone who wears thin bangles every day.

Three styles that work

  • Traditional: red and gold thread with a pearl or small stone. Suits most families and most ages.
  • Festive: kundan or meenakari. Beautiful in photos, best for the day itself.
  • Everyday: slim pairs that both of them can keep wearing for a week without fuss.

Sending a pair abroad

Pairs travel well if they are light and flat. Avoid sets with large stones that can crack in transit. Check the shipping dates early: a pair is no use if it arrives the day after.

And something for bhabhi

Many sisters add a small gift for bhabhi with the lumba. A block print dupatta or saree is a thoughtful choice. Brothers looking for the other direction will find ideas in our return gifts guide.

Frequently asked questions

A matching set: a rakhi for the brother and a lumba for his wife, designed to look like a pair.

Not identical, but related. Same colours or the same central stone works well, with the lumba a little more ornate.
