Raksha Bandhan 2027: Date, Muhurat and a Calm Plan for the Week Before

Raksha Bandhan falls on Tuesday, 17 August 2027. Here is the muhurat window, why some families abroad celebrate a day earlier, and a simple countdown so nothing is left to the last minute.

The short answer

  • Date: Tuesday, 17 August 2027 (India).
  • Purnima: starts around 10:28 AM IST on 16 August and ends around 12:58 PM IST on 17 August.
  • Rakhi window: morning of 17 August, from sunrise until roughly 12:58 PM IST.
  • Abroad: some US and Canadian panchangs list 16 August. Check your city.

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon of Shravan, and in 2027 that full moon is visible over India on Tuesday, 17 August. It is a weekday, so if you are planning a family lunch, it is worth asking for the morning off early.

The muhurat, in plain words

Two things decide the time to tie a rakhi. The first is Purnima itself: the rakhi is tied while the full-moon tithi is running. The second is Bhadra, a period that most families avoid for the ceremony.

According to Drik Panchang, Purnima in 2027 begins at about 10:28 AM IST on 16 August and ends at about 12:58 PM IST on 17 August, and Bhadra is already over before sunrise on the 17th. That leaves a clean window from sunrise to around 12:58 PM. In Delhi, sunrise that day is a little before 6 AM, so you have the whole morning.

If your family follows a particular panchang or priest, go with them. Timings shift by a few minutes from city to city.

Why some families abroad celebrate on the 16th

A tithi is tied to the moon, not to the clock on your wall. When it is morning of 17 August in India, it is still the evening of 16 August in New York or Toronto, and Purnima has been running for hours. That is why several panchangs calculated for North American cities show Monday, 16 August.

If your brother lives in the US or Canada, ask what day his family will celebrate before you choose a shipping date. One day can be the difference between a rakhi on time and a rakhi a day late. Our deadline calculator already builds in that extra day for both countries.

A calm countdown

  • Last week of July: order rakhis that are going abroad by standard post. Our USA guide has the exact dates.
  • First week of August: last safe week for express shipping abroad.
  • By 9 August: order anything going within India. Domestic delivery usually takes 4 to 5 days.
  • 15 and 16 August: buy sweets, check the thali, charge your phone for the video call.
  • 17 August, morning: tilak, aarti, rakhi, sweets, and a photo for the family group.

What goes on the thali

Most families keep it simple: roli or kumkum for the tilak, a few grains of rice (akshat), a small diya, the rakhi, and a sweet. We have a full list, with the order of the ritual, in our rakhi thali guide.

Frequently asked questions

In India it is on Tuesday, 17 August 2027, the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Shravan.

Purnima ends at about 12:58 PM IST on 17 August, and Drik Panchang notes that Bhadra is over before sunrise. So most panchangs place the rakhi window from sunrise until around 12:58 PM. Check your own city, as sunrise differs.

Some panchangs calculated for US cities list Monday, 16 August, because of the time difference. Ask your family priest or use a panchang set to your city.
